FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FROM PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS 

Q: In which areas can I find accommodation?

A: Summerstrand, Humewood and PE Central

Q: Are the residences accredited?

A: Yes, they are all accredited unless indicated otherwise.

Q: Is it possible for me to view a list of all the available residences and the prices?

Q: Do I have to pay a deposit?

A: NSFAS students do not pay a deposit but Privately funded students are required to pay a refundable deposit which is equal to one months’ rent.  Should your funding not be confirmed at the time of application, you will be required to pay a deposit and monthly rental which we will refund to you once your funding is received from NSFAS.

Q: Do I have to pay an application service fee even if I am on NSFAS?

A: Yes, all students have to pay the application service fee of R250 to the agency handling all applications. There is also a R500 contract fee once your application is confirmed. 

Q: When must I pay the application service fee?

A: The application service fee must be paid with your application to our agent handling applications. You will be required to provide us with your proof of payment in order to complete the application process.

Q: Is the application service and contract fee refundable?

A: The fees are non-refundable for all successful applicants. If you change your mind after being allocated a Rez, the fee is also not refundable.

Q: When do I pay the top-up/amenities fee?

A: You have an option to pay your top-up once-off when you move in OR in 2 equal payments per semester OR in 10 equal payments per month by the 1st of every month.  Late payment will attract a R100 penalty

Q: How do I apply for a residence?

Q: Can I share a room with a friend?

A: Of course! Just send us an email in advance so that we can make sure to place you both in the same room.

Q: What documents do I need to apply?

A: We require your ID, latest proof of registration, proof of address, parent / guardian details and proof of employment and proof of payment of the application fee.

Q: If I have paid my application fee and applied online, how soon after can I move in?    

A: All NSFAS and bursary students can move in once we have received the relevant confirmation email from the Off-Campus Housing Office (OCHO) at the University or NSFAS. 

Q: Are electricity and water included?

A: Water is included but is limited.

Each student receives an electricity contribution in accordance with NSFAS guidelines.  Once your electricity contribution is finished, you will need to pay out-of-pocket if you want additional electricity. 

Q: Can I view the House rules before applying or moving in?

A: Sure! Please download our Rez Rules  here.

Q: Can a friend stay over?

A: Sleep overs or non students using our facilities are not permitted and will result you being in breach of contract.  You are also not allowed to share the wifi details with a non resident.

Q: Can I cancel my application during the year?

A: If NSFAS permits you to do so, our cancellation policy will apply which is two months notice unless you can find a funded replacement student. 

Q: When does my contract end?

A: In accordance with university requirements, all students are required to vacate the Rez within 72 hours of writing their final examination. This policy ensures that students who have completed their exams do not cause any disturbance or inconvenience to those who are still writing.
